Akshay Kumar's next project, Padman, is inspired by the life of social activist Arunachalam Muruganantham, this film will see Akshay and wife Twinkle Khanna reuniting in a film, but not as co-stars, both have different roles as actor and producer.
Akshay Kumar has this time around chosen a subject that's never been talked about in Hindi cinema before. It's not about being bold, but about breaking taboos that hold us back. Akshay has lived with women all his life, yet he has learned more about the topic while making this film than ever before. Akshay believes in making his audience laugh, but if he can also encourage a new mindset, then that would be the best service he can do as an actor. Akshay felt even more responsible than usual to deliver his best because Twinkle was behind this project. This is her baby, right from the concept. This is something they are doing together for the first time.
Twinkle Khanna, best known as an actor and a writer, has turned producer with Padman. She feels it’s very important to make a film on menstruation in India, as that was the only way to kick-start a conversation on the topic which she believes everyone needs to know. Out of all the stories Twinkle wrote, ten chapters of a novel right after Mrs. Funnybones. But while she was researching for her column, she stumbled upon the story of Arunachalam Muruganantham. It gripped her and she abandoned her novel and began writing The Sanitary Man. Twinkle thought of making a small movie, but then Akshay and Balki (director) were both excited about the concept.
Padman is Twinkle's first production, so she can't comment on what it's like to be the producer of an Akshay Kumar-starrer, except that in this movie, the things she normally nags him about, like working too much, turned out to be an asset.
